Late July into August is the stretch that separates the easy ponds from the headaches. The water is as warm as it gets all year, your koi are showing off, and that same heat you love is quietly leaning on your pond. Nail this window and you coast into fall with clear water and happy fish. Coast through it and the little problems stack up fast.
The thing to watch: oxygen
Warm water simply holds less oxygen, and it holds the least right before dawn, after the plants have spent the night breathing instead of making it. So if you wander out some morning and find your koi hanging at the surface near the waterfall, gulping, that is them telling you they want more air. Keep the waterfall and any aeration running around the clock in a heat wave, overnight most of all. It is the single most important thing you can do in August.
Go easy at the dinner table
Your fish will beg all day. Do not fall for it. Heavy feeding in hot water is hard on their digestion and dumps waste into the pond that algae is thrilled to eat. Feed a good food in the cooler morning hours, only what they finish in a few minutes, and back off entirely when it turns brutal.
Stay ahead of the string algae
Warm and sunny is string algae's favorite weather. A little is normal in a healthy pond. A lot means it is time to act, not wait, because it spreads quick. If it has already gotten away from you, our algae control can reset the balance. Keep an eye on your water level too, since ponds drink fast in the heat. Topping off an inch here and there is just evaporation. Adding several inches a week is worth a look, and our leak detection folks can tell you which one you are dealing with.
Your quick August gut-check
- Waterfall and aeration running 24/7, overnight above all.
- Feed light, feed early, skip it on the hottest days.
- Rinse the skimmer and filter more often as the debris ramps up.
- Track how much water you are topping off.
- Get the fall netting and cleanout on the calendar now, before we fill up.
