How Much Does a Pond Cost to Run? The Honest Numbers

Everybody asks what a pond costs to build. Far fewer ask what it costs to run, and then they lie awake picturing their electric meter spinning like a slot machine. Good news: the running cost of a well-built pond is a lot smaller than most people imagine.

Let's break down where the money actually goes.

Electricity: the pump is the whole story

The one thing running around the clock is the pump that keeps your water moving. That is where nearly all the operating cost lives. The good news is that modern pond pumps are far more efficient than the energy hogs of a decade ago. A properly sized, energy-efficient pump on a well-designed koi pond or disappearing waterfall typically costs a modest amount each month to run, on par with a few household appliances, not the fortune people fear. And a lot of that comes down to design: a pond built to move water efficiently sips electricity, while a poorly plumbed one fights itself and wastes it.

Water: less than you would guess

You are not constantly refilling a pond. A healthy pond mostly holds its water and recirculates the same water over and over. What you actually lose is evaporation, more in a hot, dry stretch, less the rest of the year, topped off with a bit from the hose now and then. Over a season it adds up to very little.

Upkeep: the part you get to choose

The last piece is care, and this one is up to you. You can handle the seasonal cleanouts and weekly checks yourself, or hand the whole thing to our maintenance team and just enjoy the pond. Either way, the real cost of upkeep is far lower than most people assume, especially set against the enjoyment you get out of it every single day.

"I would recommend AquaReale to anyone who wants a beautifully maintained pond. The team goes above and beyond all expectations."
