Can You Build a Pond in a Shady Yard? Absolutely, and Here's the Upside

"My backyard is too shady for a pond." We hear it constantly, and it is one of the few pond myths we get to bust with genuinely good news. Not only can you build a beautiful pond in the shade, in some ways shade makes your life easier.

    The surprise upside: less algae

Here is the thing most people do not know. Algae is powered by sunlight. It is basically solar. A pond baking in full sun all day is fighting an uphill battle against green water and string algae, while a shaded pond gets a natural head start on staying clear. So that shady corner you thought was a dealbreaker? It might actually be doing you a favor.

    What changes in the shade

A few things, and none of them are dealbreakers. The main one is plants. Sun-loving water lilies want a lot of light to bloom, so in a shady spot we lean on plants that are happy in low light: ferns, irises, and the many marginal plants that thrive at the water's edge in dappled shade. Honestly, a shade garden built around a pond, all ferns and cool greens and the sound of water, is one of the most peaceful things we build.

If the shade comes from big trees, the other thing to plan for is leaves. Trees drop, and that debris needs to stay out of the water. That is what a skimmer and a little seasonal maintenance are for, and in fall, netting. Manageable, and worth it.

    Shade and your fish

Your koi will thank you. Fish actually appreciate shade in the summer. It keeps the water cooler and gives them relief from the heat, and it doubles as cover from birds overhead. A disappearing waterfall or a shaded koi pond tucked under the trees can be the coolest, calmest spot on the whole property, literally and otherwise.
