So you want a pond. Somewhere along the way — a friend's backyard, a garden show, a video that ate your whole evening — the idea got its hooks in you, and now you can picture water and fish and that sound right outside your door.
Fair warning: it's a little addicting. But where on earth do you actually start? Not with a shovel. Let's back up.
Start with how you'll use it
Before a single rock gets placed, the real first step is a conversation — with yourself, your household, and eventually with us. What do you actually want out of this? Koi you'll feed by hand and fuss over? A quiet, low-key water garden with plants and frogs? Just the sound of a disappearing waterfall off the patio with no open pool to tend?
There's no wrong answer, but the answer shapes everything that follows — size, placement, filtration, budget. A koi pond and a simple waterfall are very different builds.
Then think about the spot
Where would it live? People love a pond they can see from the kitchen window or hear from the deck. We'll look at sunlight, slope, drainage, how close the trees are, and where the water and power runs would go. Sometimes the perfect view and the perfect engineering are the same spot. Sometimes we nudge it a few feet — and that's exactly the kind of thing worth sorting out before anyone digs.
Get a feel for budget
Ponds come in a wide range, and being upfront about budget early saves everyone time and gets you a design that actually fits. Our pond cost calculator is a great no-pressure way to get a ballpark, and the pond cost guide walks through what drives the number so there are no surprises down the road.
"Matthew, Laura, and the crew at AquaReale have been fantastic to work with. They're extremely personable, well educated, and do great work. They are timely and efficient, and I'm so glad we were able to find them."

Then bring in people who do this all day
Here's the honest truth: the biggest regrets in pond ownership come from ponds that were built wrong from the start — too shallow, bad filtration, no plan for maintenance. Starting with a real conversation is how you dodge all of it.
