Where Should Your Pond Go? A Straight Guide to Picking the Spot

People obsess over what their pond will look like. Fewer people think about where it should actually go, and that decision matters just as much. Put a pond in the wrong spot and it feels like an afterthought. Put it in the right one and it becomes the center of gravity for the whole backyard.

Here is how we think about it when we walk a property.

Put it where you already are

The single best rule: build the pond where you will actually see and hear it. Off the patio. Outside the kitchen window. Along the path you walk every day. A gorgeous koi pond tucked in the far back corner where nobody goes is a waste of a good pond. The whole point is the sound of the water and watching the fish, so put it within earshot of where you spend your evenings.

    Mind the sun, a little

Some sunlight is good. It keeps plants blooming and the ecosystem lively. But full, all-day blazing sun invites more algae and heats the water fast. A spot with morning sun and some afternoon shade is often the sweet spot. And a shadier spot works too, it just changes the plant list.

Think about trees, slope, and what is underground

A few practical things we check so you do not get surprised later. Big trees mean falling leaves and roots to work around, doable, just something to plan for. A slope everyone else sees as a problem is often a gift, because it is the perfect excuse for a disappearing waterfall or a stream. And before anyone digs, we locate the underground utilities, because nobody wants to find the gas line the hard way.
