A backyard pond looks simple enough, right? Dig a hole, drop in a liner, add water and fish. How hard can it be?
Harder than it looks. We've been building and rescuing ponds around Philadelphia for a long time, and a good chunk of our work is fixing ponds that started as somebody's weekend project or a bargain install that didn't hold up.
Here's the thing nobody tells you: a pond isn't a hole full of water. It's a living ecosystem. The rocks, gravel, plants, fish, bacteria, and moving water all work together to keep the whole thing clear and healthy. Get the balance wrong and you've built yourself a green, murky headache instead of a backyard retreat.
Where experience actually pays off
Anyone can dig. What experience buys you is knowing the stuff that isn't obvious until it goes wrong. Proper depth so your fish survive winter. The right pump sized to the right waterfall. A liner installed so it doesn't shift, sag, or spring a leak two seasons in. Grading that keeps runoff and debris out. Plumbing you can actually service later.
Those rookie mistakes aren't cheap to undo. Tearing out a poorly built pond to redo it properly costs far more than doing it right the first time, which is why we'd always rather build yours from scratch than inherit someone else's shortcuts.
"Matthew, Laura, and the crew at AquaReale have been fantastic to work with. They're extremely personable, well educated, and do great work. They are timely and efficient, and I'm so glad we were able to find them."

Experience shows up in the fun stuff too. Where a disappearing waterfall should sit so you hear it from the patio. How to build a koi pond that stays crystal clear instead of pea-soup green. The little design choices that make a water feature feel like it was always meant to be there.
