Spring Pond Opening Do's and Don'ts

The first warm Saturday of spring, every pond owner gets the same itch. The sun's out, the water's sparkling, and you want to rip off the netting and cannonball right into the season.

    Slow down. Just a little.

Your pond spent all winter in a quiet, cold slumber, and how you wake it up matters. Do it right and you're rewarded with clear water and happy fish by May. Rush it and you can spend the whole summer chasing green water. Here's how we do it.

    The do's

    • Ease in gradually. Your fish and the beneficial bacteria that keep your water clean are still sluggish from the cold. A slow, steady startup lets everything catch up together.
    • Clean out the skimmer and pull the big debris. All those leaves and bits that snuck in over winter will rot and feed algae if you leave them. Get them out first.
    • Restart your aeration and pumps. Moving water means oxygen, and oxygen means life. Once the ice is gone for good and temps are steadily climbing, get things circulating again.
    • Wait to feed the fish. Hold off until the water is consistently in the mid-50s. Feed too early and their metabolism can't handle it.

    The don'ts

Whatever you do, don't dump the whole pond and refill it with fresh water. It feels like a clean slate, but you're throwing out all that good bacteria you spent a year building, and you'll shock your fish besides. A proper cleanout is a rinse and a reset, not a full drain-and-fill.

Don't blast cold, chlorinated tap water in without treating it, and don't crank the feeding schedule back to summer levels overnight.

"I would recommend AquaReale to anyone who wants a beautifully maintained pond. The team goes above and beyond all expectations."
